Winchester 1903 22auto
I have a Winchester model 1903 .22 auto circa 1914, it is a deluxe model and I am curious as to what the value may be.
Also, how do you "grade" a guns condition?
There is very little bluing left on the gun and it has patchy rust but far from poor condition. The wood is in decent shape and overall it is a very solid 100yr old gun.
Would anyone care to share their thoughts on maybe having this restored or it is better off in it's current state?
Thanks,
Bob

Hello Bob,
Why do you believe that it is a "deluxe model"?
The graded condition is directly related to the % of remaining finish remaining on all parts of the gun, most importantly the receiver frame. Based on the fact that you state there is very little bluing left on the gun, the graded condition is very very low.
As for "restoring it" that would be a colossal waste of $$$. The Model 1903 is one of the least collected Winchester Models. As such, they are not worth a significant amount of $$$ even when they are in very good (original) condition. Leave the rifle as is, and save your $$$.0 -
I think it is a deluxe model because of the checkering on the stock and the hand grip area. the standard model was just straight wood.
Is that correct?0 -

If the checkering is factory original, that is a possible indication that is a Fancy (deluxe) rifle. However, standard models could be ordered with checkered stocks.
The vast number of the factory Fancy Sporting Rifles have deluxe (3X) walnut stocks and pistol grip butt stocks.0
