Winchester 70 issues Pre 64
I have 2 Pre 64 Model 70s. One is a 270 WCF (1949)and the other is a 30 Gov 06( 1947). They are both pretty nice guns, but both have issues.
Here's the deal:
The 270 has had the stock bedded and shortened. I didnt notice it when I purchased since it has the original Butt plate and the gun looks really nice. Plus I bought it from a 77 year old who said he has had it since it was new. I could have looked at it better but didnt. I also missed a crack at the bottom of the butt also. Its small and solid but????? I dont think he was cheating. He either didnt remember things or it was like this when he bought it. Or age has a way of bring on forgetfullness
The 30- 06 looks nearly new except is has the reciever drilled on the side ( 5 holes) for a scope mount. Then a few minutes ago, I found the stock cracked behind the tang. I took it apart and see it is split down by the trigger as well. It is solid still but not what I expected. Perhaps I may have caused the split. I changed the stock out and used it on the 270. Maybe I needed to fit it?
I was just going to use them both for a hunting but now Im thinking I should sell them. Part them out ( im not really comfortable with that) or ???
Really I guess Im just asking your thoughts. I could buy a Black stock for the 06 and still use it but then I have more money in it.
Are model 70 stocks bad about spliting? The 06 stock that has the crack is a transiton gun that is one of the first to have the " v" Tang. It has the pistol grip on the stock still like the Pre War guns. The 270 is a bit newer and does not have the pistol grip.
Anyway Thanks for listening

Well, you learned some lessons and I hope they did'nt cost you much. If they were mine I would get rid of them because I collect on condition and dont shoot too much any more. The 70 is not prone to cracking unless stocks are changed out that dont fit quite right. They are still worth money. Good Luck. 0 -
No Im not buried in them. I hate selling before I get what I want to replace things, but. I think Im gonna go ahead and see what they do on GB
I probably did cause the crack. The reciever fit a bit tight when it went into the stock. I didnt force it, it just didnt drop in like the one that came out.

"I was just going to use them both for a hunting but now Im thinking I should sell them.".........WHY, THEY ARE JUST AS GOOD FOR 'HUNTING' NOW. A TRIP TO YOUR GUNSMITH AND A LITTLE ACRA GLASS BEDDING AND YOU ARE WELL AHEAD OF THE GAME. THEY ARE NOT COLLECTOR GUNS NOW AND NEVER WILL BE. 0 -
What Mike said, plus you'll have two of the best made hunting rifles you can buy.

Don't forget to provide us a link when you sell them on the auction block, and please take lots of pictures.
