Add Pistol Grip to SKS Rifle?
Has anyone successfully added an AK-47/AKM pistol grip to an SKS Rifle? It would need to be modified some to get the grip flush to the wood stock, however it would also need an extended AK pistol grip bolt of some sort and would need the correct size hole tapped behind the trigger assembly.

Sounds like a lot of work to fix a problem that doesn't exist.
One of the nice things about the SKS is that it does exactly what it was intended to do, without modification.
An extended pistol grip is an "evil feature", possibly converting a "sporting rifle" to a so-called semi-automatic assault rifle. Depending upon other mods, this could be a critical non-improvement.
Bottom line: If you want an AK, buy an AK.

I already have AK's and there isn't a problem I just wanted to make an improvement is all and inquired to see if anyone else had and one can always have an original SKS stock to be original, but the purpose of this is for modification.
Its supposedly legal to purchase a pistol grip stock and place it on the SKS so adding a pistol grip shouldn't be a problem especially to one that's a preban import.
Anyway that is really besides the point as the question was about adding an AK pistol grip to the SKS stock and if anyone had accomplished it before, that's all.0 -
I've seen pic of sks's modified like that--butt ugly looking though. If you want a pistol gripped version Tapco & ATI both make some with folding/sliding stocks with pistol grips. 0 -
Yeah, those SKS pistol grip stocks are nice but I was hoping to get a nice AK pistol grip to attach properly and had already set it up in such a way where it looked like an SKS-D had an AK pistol grip and it looked nice. And alot better than the ugly SKS pistol grip that you are referring too (yeah it is ugly too) from the website that we are apparently not supposed to mention. 0 -

It's part 30. I've seen them and they look OK, but I couldn't tell you how hard they are to install.
Word came from high up on the Gun Broker ladder that the (now edited) site is considered to be a competing auction site and their sale of parts is secondary to their sales of firearms by auction. In the future please omit reference to that site. This came right from the top.0 -

+1.
Yes, adding a conventional pistol grip to an SKS "can" be done. . .but why?
Not only will that make the gun "fugly" and ruin a factory SKS stock, but you're also adding one "evil" feature that certain jurisdictions don't like.
I'd add that if you want the AK-like pistol grip, just go buy an AK!0 -

I just added a Choate pistol grip folding stock! No sweat no tears!

I was also thinking of doing the ATI dragunov stock however I like the wood and wanted a wood AK handle to add to it as it actually looked pretty good and alot better than the ugly plastic add-on pistol grip.
I should design some different wood pistol grip stocks for the SKS, might be lucrative and I could at least always add it to the inventory...0 -
Under 922r most modifications to an SKS are still illegal unless you first add enough US made parts to make the SKS no longer considered an import. I believe 10 imported parts from the approved list are all that are allowed if you want to add modifications such as pistol grips, folding stocks, high cap mags, bayonets/mounts, etc. However, you may add a high cap magazine as a single modification if you first remove both the bayonet and the bayonet mount and have no other non-sporting modifications present. Only one "evil feature" is allowed unless you add the previously mentioned US parts. When the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban sunset in 2004 the 922r provision wasn't affected as it was contained in an earlier ban that is still in effect. I know that thousands of SKS's are currently in violation and these violations are rarely being enforced, but they could be, especially if the ATF wants to arrest you for some reason. My advice is to leave your SKS alone. It works best just as it comes from the factory. If you don't believe me about the requirements of 922r call the ATF and talk to an experienced agent. 0 -
I have no reason not to believe you, however is this still the case as well with an SKS-D model that was designed and manufactured to use the AK-47 magazine? 0 -
If the SKS D was originally imported with a bayonet it is OK to keep it even if it does have a high cap mag. I wouldn't add any other non-sporting features such as a pistol grip or folding stock without consulting the ATF first, though. The federal laws affecting SKS's are often hard to interpret and many states have even more restrictive laws, especially California. 0 -
That may be. 0
