Single Six question
I just picked up an old model (3 screw) Ruger Single Six with 2 cylinders. I assumed one was .22lr and the other .22mag, but it turns out they are both .22lr. Thats what I get for assuming.
Iam going to buy a Mag cylinder. My question is... Are the old model and new model cylinders interchangeable?

This might help a little.

Thanks cartod, Most of that thread deals with cylinders that are too tight or too loose. There was a mention of a guy swaping cylinders back and forth between old model and new model guns.
I guess I should ask, Will a new model cylinder work in my old model revolver even with some fitting. I already know an old model cylinder will work in my gun.0 -
Laredo Lefty,
If you get to the bottom of this and it turns out the old & new model cylinders are interchangeable, I have a like new magnum cylinder [new model] that I would love to swap straight up for a LR cylinder.0 -
go over to

and see if any one over there has one that they will sell ya or trade to you0 -
They are not interchangable. JC 0 -
It seems there are 2 types of Single Six cylinders. The older model have fluted cylinders and no engraving while the newer model cylinders have lines machined around the circumference with 22 mag engraved between the lines and no fluting, is that a safe assumption?? 0 -
There is a person somewhere that is trying to figure out how he wound up with 2 magnum cylinders.

Yes, old and new model "Ruger single six" cylinders are interchangeable. Measure the Over All Length of the cylinder that fits your single-six, try to get one of the same length. Of course it needs to be checked for timing.
Early 3 screw Single-Six models with a serial number of 150000 or earlier should not be fitted with a 22mag cylinder. These guns have a true 22lr diameter barrel. After 150000 Ruger started using 22mag barrels on all their Single-Six guns.
All Old Model 3 screw Single-Six cylinders are fluted. The only way to tell them apart is by the breech end.
Some of the earliest New Model Single-Six guns had Old Model cylinders until all the old cylinders were used up, then Ruger changed over to the New Model 22mag cylinder being no flutes and stamped around the cylinder with 22 mag.
LL, check the barrel end of the cylinders. If your gun was shipped as a convertible, 22lr/22mag, one of those cylinders will have the last 3 numbers of your guns serial number stamped or etched on the cylinder. That cylinder will be the original to the gun.
Hope this helps.

Its actually 2 .22LR cylinders. Bought the gun at an auction. It came with 2 set of grips and an extra cylinder in one of those red velvet bags and a box. Since it had an extra cylinder I naturally "assumed" one was for magnums and one for LR......... WRONG.0 -
2xbyu.... Thanks for the info. My gun is way past the 150000 ser number so its good to go for magnums. I took it to my gunsmith the other day and he showed me the difference between LR cylinders and Magnum cylinders.
The cylinder in the gun has the last 3 digits of the ser number electric penciled on the front of it. Both cylinders look like the one on the left in the pic you posted.
Here it is......
