FFL dealer question
Post Office form 1508, Statement by shipper of firearms, is the post office supposed to keep a copy of this form or do they just stamp it, sign it and return it to you, the shipper?

Form 1508 is a statement from the sender that he and the recipient are both duly authorized FFLs. Once signed and submitted by the shipper, the Form 1508 is stamped by the post office and kept on file there for a year. If additional shipments are made to the same recipient during the next 12 months you don't need to fill out a new 1508, the old one remains in force, but a new Form 1508 must be filed whenever a handgun shipment is made to a new addressee. 0 -
Thanks Mark, I took a gun to the post office for my dealer, handed the clerk the form, she stamped it and gave it back to me. I asked her if she was supposed to keep it and she said, "I dunno". I wasn't sure myself! 0 -
I wouldn't worry too much about it. 95% of postal clerks have never even seen the form, much less processed one. 0 -
Next time this happens, make two copies of the 1508, and make sure the clerk also stamps the one you will be retaining for your records!
At my P.O. one clerk keeps the 1508, the other doesn't. So, that's the reason for two copies. The 2nd copy (for your own record) is a CYA, as it is unnecessary..but I can't think of a better document showing proof of shipment than the 1508! Best, Joe0 -
My postmaster keeps mine on file, renewable every year. Some post offices do it differently. I have received packages of guns that had the form attached to the outside of the box in a "Invoice Enclosed" plastic envelope. 0 -

The Form 1508 isn't a "renewable" form. Postal regs state you need to provide one anytime you are shipping a handgun. You can list as many addresses on one Form as you want or attach additional sheets of paper with the addresses.
The form itself says so. It also says to "retain for one year".0
