Old collectible gun
If I buy and old collectible gun. How much cleaning and polishing can I do to it before a collector would say that I've gone too far. Its it acceptable to polish the receiver? Can the checkering be cleaned of gunk? This is the gun I'm thinking of

If you were to purchase it, IMHO you shouldn't do any thing at all to it, other then minimal amount of light very careful cleaning.
Very interesting appearing shotgun, don't recall seeing another with a similar appearance. It almost looks like one of the rifles Frank Wesson made, back in the 19th Century.
Very interesting concerning the Proof Marks, as they are German used for only a limited time during the World War II era. The "Eagle N" commercial proof in that style, would only have been used between 1940 and the end of the war in 1945. Perhaps it was some war booty from the invasion of France in 1940, that was taken back to Germany and then repaired and sold on the civilian market?0 -
djh860,
The gun in that auction is truly a work of a master craftsman. My feelings are if you want a new gun, buy a new one.
That piece is art & history with charachter added, don't mess it up.
Cleaning can be done with bore solvent for metal then oiled or furniture polish for the wood applied or rubbed with either a soft cloth or a plastic bristled brush. Anything else is likely to be intrusive & should be left to the expert restorer.
Just my $0.02 Jim0
