The 1903-A4's had a Redfield top mount. It's going to be tough to set up your rifle the way you want it without drilling. I have an FN Mauser with a Redfield receiver sight and a Williams side mount and HCO (high central overbore) rings. On that rifle, I can use either scope or iron sights. However the left receiver rail has to be drilled for that mount. Lyman 48 sights are getting hard to afford. Stroebel's book lists a value of $175-$375. The designation for the Springfield sight was 48S. Other slides may work but keep in mind, there were both rights and lefts, ie., the Springfield, Mauser, Enfield, etc. mounted on the right side while the Winchester 70, 54, Remington 721, etc. mounted on the left.

The Lyman 48S or 48C will work on the 1903. I believe the 48S had a hinged peep on the front of the aperture hole that could be turned down to allow for aiming through the threaded hole. A neat idea but in my hunting experience I have found it had little practical value. The windage/elevation slide you need is probably the one numbered to 125 on the elevation scale. You are almost certainly going to have to buy a complete sight to get the part you need. Later Lyman 48 sights are only numbered to 60 on the elevation scale, maybe some to 90. These fit the shallow base. If you get shallow based Lyman 48 and install it on a rifle that has been inletted for the one numbered to 125 you will have an ugly gap in the wood beneath the sight base. The Lyman 48 sights show up often on the internet auctions. Some show up without saying which Lyman 48 it is. The one for the Springfield mounts on the right side and will have a sligh step up in the horozontal part of the windage/elevation slide. Prepare to pay a lot. You can do a smart search of closed autions to see what some have sold for.
