Winchester Model 70 Scope Mounting
I recently bought a Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter in 7mm STW off gunbroker, I'm having a hard time finding scope mounts for this rifle, The front base is standard to any model 70 with wide spaced holes, but the rear base needs 2 screws roughly 1/2 inch apart, nowhere near as wide as the front, I don't know where to look for the base to fit, I have a set of Leupold dual dovetail bases that were supposed to fit any Model 70 after 64, but they sure won't fit my new rifle.

welcome to the forum I had the same problem with a post 64. I looked in my repair box for the set i used and couldn't find the ones that fit - sorry. seems like you have to order a reverse set, but i could be wrong since it has been several years. I do know the leupold #'s were wrong on the dual dove tails and i had to send them back to Midway.... 0 -
upon further research I think I'm now able to answer my own question, buried in the fine print of the ring chart on one of the maker's sites, I found that the Winchester 70 has a ring spacing of .435 if i'm correct, while the Model 70 express rifles (that is to say rifles chambered in 300 H&H, 375 H&H, 416 Remington Magnum, 7mm STW, and 458 Win Mag) have a screw spacing of .330 on the rear of the reciever, not sure why they did this, but hopefully this will quickly answer someone elses questions in the future. Thanks for the answers I've recieved so far. 0
