I'm currently looking at buying an AR-10. Ive located 2 that Im considering buying. One is an Armalite flat top and the other is a DPMS, they are practically identical except the DPMS has the 6 way stock and an aftermarket trigger. Quality wise how do these rifles compare? I dont mind spending a little extra for a quality rifle. These two rifles are within $100 of eachother. Any opinions from owners?

    armilite1015,

The barrel nut threads are different. Armalite uses 18tpi threads and DPMS/KAC use 16tpi. This has a bearing on hand guard selection.

The extensions and bolts are basically the same with the exception of headspace consistency. DPMS is all over the place while I rarely get more than 0.001" difference between a run of 50 builds with Armalite parts. I wouldn't hesitate to switch bolts on any of the Armalite builds I have done with Armalite parts but I definitely would hesitate with DPMS.

The gas tube lengths are different.

Barrels are interchangeable, but cause problems due to a 3/16" length difference in gas tubes. Armalite uses the longer gas tubes to use standard AR15 handguards. The 3/16" makes up for the wider barrel nut/bigger receiver.

Armalite "carbines" use a mid-length gas system while DPMS "carbines" use a carbine gas system.

I would measure carefully before committing to a purchase.

    ADDED:

Without trying to write a book about this, there are slight differences in the feed ramps as well.

The biggest issue is that of headspace.

I suggest keeping Armalite with Armalite and DPMS with DPMS. Life is much more simple that way.

    Best.

Well I would have used the Armalite barrel nut but with the gas tube being slightly longer, that throws a wrench into the situation.
Thanks Nononsense for the info. looks like I'll go in a different direction.
