I have three of them. A year or two ago, I became aware that Savage had started chambering their model 14's in .250 and .300 Savage so I had to have 'em. (I'm a sucker for the old cartridges!) The .250 shoots factory Remington Corelokt and Winchester Silver tips very well. I haven't found a handload that it likes yet. The .300 shoots 165 gr. Nosler balistic tips ahead of 43 gr. of RL15 @ 2657 FPS. Eight 5-shot groups average 1.45". Earlier this year, on the auction side, a 14 in .270 WSM was offered. The price was right, so I have that one, too. It is very fast with 130 gr. Sierras and shoots those under an inch and a quarter. In fact, I haven't found a load yet that it doesn't like!
So--I like 'em! The ones I have are blued steel and Walnut. I don't like bare metal (or dull black metal) and plastic stocks and magazines. All three of mine have detachable box magazines but I believe they do make them with internal magazines/floor plates. I like the accu-trigger, too. So you can consider this a recommendation!0 -
Sage1,
The ones I've shot I loved. There was a .308 in one {edit: at a local store}, when they first came out, and it shot sub MOA with factory. I almost bought it for $450. But I thought I had too many guns and didn't buy it. {edit:} A friend of mine bought it and that's how I got to find out how well it shot.
FWIW, I would love to have one in a .250-3000 or .300 Savage. I too love those old cartridges. I also feel those "old" cartridges are certainly competitive in today's world using the right twists, powders and bullets. Also, technology in manufacturing makes for better consistency in barrels, cases, optics and powders. That consistency would lead me to say that a good rifle in those calibers would certainly be competitive in today's world. I think if you toyed around with the right load you would get much better than MOA accuracy from a model 14.0
