New to the M1A World
Just bought one a standard M1A. Would like to know what are the best scope and mounts?. I just got it for fun and target shooting. What else should I look at getting for it as accesories.? Where could I go for the best price on the ammo?
Thanks in advance for your responses.
Thanks

Congratulations.
You can start off by searching this forum's archives (SEARCH at the top of the page) for "M1A" & "M14". That should give a lot of the information you need.
You could post some photos for us, because we really don't know exactly what you have.
Your rifle probably was chambered for 7.62 mm NATO, but we don't know that for sure. If so, & it was assembled by Springfield Armory Inc, you can use .308 WIN. The first place to look for ammo is www.odcmp.com . Stock up on ammo when you find it at a reasonable price, & a few extra mags are a good idea.

The best scope is going to be the same as for any other rifle. I prefer the IOR and I have a 4-14x50 on one of mine.
As for mounts ARMS 18, Smith or Sadlak. None are cheep but if you are sticking $$$ glass on a $$$$ rifle get a GOOD mount. I went with the Sadlak Airborne on mine scoped M1A.

Springfield just come out with a new generation of scope mounts. I'd suggest one of those. the new ones are machined, so the tolerances are much closer then past SA mounts.
IMO the M1A is already a heavy rifle, and the iron sights are very good. A high quality QD light mounted via a midwest mount would be my only addition to a standard M1A.
A few scopes that I would recommend you to look at are either the IOR Valdada 1-4x26 or 1.5-8x26 tactical scope, or the trijicon 1-4x24 accu-point.
1.5-8x26 the hash marks are calibrated for m855 5.56 but will work just as well with M80 147 grain ball.

I started with a Sadlak scope mount and recently switched to the ARMS 18 because it sits lower and allows for a better cheek weld. The ARMS is steel and is well made.
Ther are alot of different mounts out there for the M1A. I would steer clear of all the $29.99 and below versions.
Bassett makes an interesting single point mount, most M1A mounts are "3 point" meaning the secure to the rifle via the stripper clip charging bar post, the large screw on the left side of the receiver and a by resting a post on the front of the receiver.
There are full or partial length rail systems that allow for forward mounting as well as conventional. I bought a full length type at a gun show a while back, it's a full rail from gas block to stripper clip and rails on the side that do not protrude bbeyong the stock. No idea who made the darn thing, but it works.
Getting a good mount on an M1A is a little bit of an adventure, read alot first (or You Tube) and buy later ....[;)]0 -
A.R.M.S is the only decent mount I've found for my M1A. Yes they are nearly $200, but again its the only decent mount. I do recommend using lock-tite also.
Don't bother with a Springfield Gen3 mount unless you plan on permanently soldering it to your gun.0 -
Springfield Gen 4 mount, CNC machined, available in steel or aluminium.

I like the ARMS mount. It is extremely well made, the rings are easy on and off with no change in zero and the mount does not interfere with the use of iron sights with the rings removed. With the scope attached it is possible to use the iron sights, but with national match sights on the rifle the view is obscured and the sights difficult to use. Optics are a personal choice and I am the kind of guy who'll never settle for just one device when I can buy two instead! I prefer a Leupold 3.5X10 law enforcement scope for ranges below 500 meters and a Kahles 10X MILDOT for ranges over 500 meters.

My ARMS has the full rail over the action. I haven't experienced the oft discussed empty brass being caught in the mount problem, is yours a newer/older version or did you have the center section of the rail removed?0 -
