1920 COMMERCIAL LUGER WITH UNNUMBERED SIDEPLATE
I recently bought a 1920 commercial Luger (serial # 95xxL) with all matching numbers, except the magazine. The sideplate on the gun has no number on it. It's not even on the usual hidden place on the bottom.
Do you think it has been replaced or do you think it was just unstamped for some reason? The blue on the sideplate is worn from holster wear a little more than most of the rest of the gun, but it also matches the wear about a half inch down the left side of the receiver immediately behind it. I don't have access to a camera right now so I can't post pics, so I don't know how much you can help me, but its worth a shot.

1920 commercial's are the red headed stepchild of Lugers as far as collectors are concerned. They were assembled in post WW I Germany by various organizations who were trying to make a buck by selling Lugers made up from both military, commercial and newly made parts. Almost any possible combination of markings can be found on them. As long as they were able to pass the German commercial proof requirements, the assemblers wouldn't care if all the serial numbered parts matched or not.
My WAG is that your sideplate was a unnumbered replacement part that was fitted to your Luger on assembly. As long as it worked correctly and was able to pass proof. The guys that were assembling and selling it could have cared less.0 -
I've seen a lot of commercials with a blank sideplate. No way to know so don't sweat it. 0
