Hi, This question caught my eye, I've looked into the original "86 twist rate and found it was 1 in 60". my question is out of curiosity but you may find it of more value. What should a modern version be? The originals were used with black powder first, which would foul a barrel quickly, and later, smokeless but the same twist. I wonder, were they accurate with that twist or just easier to clean? Will that be an inferior accuracy twist rate? 1 in 60" is a good round ball twist. Just curious

The original rifles chambered in the 50-110 used a bullet that was little more than a round ball....the 1 in 60 twist rate was acceptable. If you can use a barrel with a 1 in 38 twist you should have all the bases covered. (damn fat finger, skinny keys and no proof reader!)

It will take a little research and I don't have the materials handy but...

The one you hear about is the .50-110-300 which is an express type load with light for caliber bullet and slow rifling.
The same chamber but with a faster twist was sold as the .50-100-450 which makes more sense.

The rifling twist rate for the 50-110 Express was 1:54. The 50-95 W.C.F. twist rate was 1:60.

As Hawk Carse mentioned, the 50-100-450 was the same case and chamber, but with a faster 1:36 twist rate to accomodate the 450-grain bullet.

Powder fowling was not a problem with the .507 bore diameter.

As Ken said, the original bullet was little more than a round ball. My traditional 50cal muzzle loader has a Green River round ball barrel, it has a 1 in 60 twist. The heavier bullets required a faster twist.

For what it's worth; years ago I had an 86 Winchester 45-90-300 that consistantly outshot three mint Trapdoors, all using Blue Label 45-70-450 U.S Army black powder loads, at 100 yards.
