When the twin recoil springs with their guide assembly are removed that will release the pressure on the top hand guard. Just pull it up at the rear and remove it. If it has been in there for a very long time and the rifle is filthy it may not want to come out, but it will eventually. Slipping a thin blade between the two halves of the hand guard may make it easier to free the top guard and once the top hand guard it removed you can access the gas system and the piston. I have never removed the bottom hand guard since it is not part of the standard disassembly procedure. Member p3skyking is our AR-180 man and if he spots this thread he may have some better advice on detail stripping the rifle.

thankyou. I can now get to the underside of the bbl which has light rust. I would like to use gunsmith cloth on the bbl. if I can remove the lower handguard without having to remove the front sight.

    Tommy,
    Sorry, but you can't.
When you look at the bottom you'll see a round piece of the bottom handguard poking into the lower receiver.
That should have been made spring loaded, but the engineers didn't do it that way.
You must knock out the two pins holding the sight/gas trap and slide it forward.

Thankyou,I can work around the handguard with a strip of light abrasive cloth under the bbl.I do not wish to tackle knocking out the pins on the front sight.
