modern engraving
I have been looking for a used O/U thinking of spending $2000. I have been noticing that a lot of "engraving" is not cut by hand. Most it seems is cast , rolled or pressed or cut with a machine possibly laser etched.
I really want hand cut. I recently looked at a weatherby regency it seemed hand cut to me. I saw a baretta BL5 that seemed hand engraved. The weatherby orion D'italia while beautiful did not look hand cut. Most guns in my price range and less than 40 years old don't appear hand engraved.
Does anyone else care about this? Does anyone know of a forum or a group that discusses this? Are there any lists of companies that still hand engrave? Any advice is appreciated. I know my price point is low but that is what I have to work with.

I believe Benelli hand engraves some of their shotguns and there is another Italian company (whose name escapes me at this time) that uses hand engraving but $2,000 would barely be a down payment.
As far as does it matter? A plain jane Grade I gun can shoot a well as a pretty Grade V gun, but then how much value do you place in pride of ownership?
I've finally decided that I don't care if my guns are worth $10,000 or $500 after I leave. As long as I enjoyed them for what they were designed for, I don't care how much my descendents get for them.0 -

These shotguns are made by Stefano Fausti in Italy. I remember seeing photos of their engravers working at the Vegas ShotShow. I can't tell you if the ones made for Weatherby are hand engraved, or laser etched.0 -
I googled an American Rifleman that said the "engraving" on the Orion d'Italia II was "chemical type." Which means etched and maybe cleaned up with a graver on the nicer ones. 0 -

Actually, if truth be known, you've posed a Catch-22 scenario (given the dollar value in your post).
If you were to refer to buying via the 'constant dollar', and extrapolate (adjust) to yesteryear's buying power, you probably wouldn't have been able to afford engraving back then, also.
Only difference being, is that now, you have a cheaper, alternate option. An option that was unavailable back in the good 'ol days!
All 'modern day' has done for you, is to allow you engraving that is affordable. The 'real deal' will still be out of reach judging by [statement in blue, above]. Sorry. It is what it is. Good luck in your search! Joe0 -
Go to the FEGA website. There are many engravers who do excellent work. It does not come cheap. 0
