Inland M1A1 Carbine SN

I just purchased an Inland M1A1 paratrooper .30 M1 carbine. The sernial number is 948555 and the barrel is dated 11-43 (Inland mfg div General Motors). This seems normal enough and the receiver number appears to be matching in terms of production year with the barrel (from the information i could find on the internet). my question is that the serial number has an X at the end, so that it reads 948555X on the receiver. what does the X denote? overall its in great shape, near perfect finish, AAS stamp on the lumber. what would the value range be on a weapon like this assuming almost all parts are original?
please advise.

  Thanks for the prompt reply. is this a duplicate of another manufacturers SN or did Inland duplicate its own range? would the year of this X SN still be 1943?

  That number is in the Inland range but Saginaw is supposed to have overrun their number block by 10,000 units and Inland added the X to eliminate any possible serial number duplication.
