remington 742

I was wondering if any one had any pics of the damage cause by the bolt in the reciever of the 742. As a reference of what to look for.

    My wife has a Remington 742 that is backing out primers. It has sentimental value to her.I've had several gunsmiths tell me they can't get parts or don't want to look at it. Don't know if it was bought new or not. We have only put a couple of hundred rounds through it. Last gunsmith did at least take it apart and clean it better than I did. Trotline weight? Wall hanger? Give it to one of the local gangs so it will blow up in their face?

    I had this same problem with a Ruger .44 Carbine. I really had to do a "better job" cleaning and leaving a thin film of oil in the chamber area...on mine it did the trick! Good Luck...I suppose it could be something else...but I am not qualified to say.

    You might also try a very thin fil of oil on the shells in the magazine...until it hopefully works itself out...just an added idea!

    IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN THE BARREL OFF, YOU HAVEN'T CLEANED IT. YOUR CHAMBER MAY BE DIRTY/RUSTY OR YOU MAY HAVE A BAD EXTRACTOR/BOLT FACE.

    +1 Mike Whisky..... plus if the chamber is pitted, the shell will extrude into the pits, creating excessive drag...The extractor is probably pulling off part of the rim in it's attempt to remove the empty shell from the chamber....

    had to retire my 742 because of this problem..
    The head spacing was to big.
    Sent it in to Remington, and they offered me a new 7400 below cost.
    The receiver on the 742 in not hardened and they would not rebarrel it because of liability.
    Not for sure if yours is out of spec, but I would check it, and if it is,,,good luck on finding a barrel
    just my 2 pennies worth
    what is it going to hurt to call Remington, and ask if they would rebarrel it

    When I had the problem on mine after my smith failed after a few tries. Sent it to Remington for the cure.

    "what is it going to hurt to call Remington, and ask if they would rebarrel it"............WELL, REM. HASN'T PRODUCED A 742 (OR PARTS) FOR OVER 20 YEARS. THEY WILL NOT WORK ON THEM.

    They wont work on them because of the weak receiver.
    You can still order the barrels from them.
    They wont admit to the flawed receivers, fearing a lawsuit.
    I was told this off the record by Remington.
    Why else would they be willing to sell me a new 7400 for $100.00?

    HERE IS A UPDATE ON THE RIFLE.I TOKE OFF THE BARRELL AND CLEANED THE CHAMBER AND BARRELL.THERE IS NO PITTING AND AFTER CLEANING IT HAS A MIRROR LOOK TO IT AND IT IS STILL HOLDING THE SHELL.I WILL TRY CALLING REMINGTON.I'M ALSO GOING TO TRY ANOTHER BARRELL FROM A FRIEND OF MINES 742 AND SEE IF THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.ATLEAST I WILL KNOW IF IT IS THE BARRELL.THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP.
