.50-110 Information Sought

Any leads on where I can get a repro 1886 Winchester chambered in the .50-110, or the .50-110 Express?

    Hello Joe,

    I do not believe that any were made in the 50-110 Express... 45-70 and 45-90 are your only choices on the modern reproductions. The ammo availability was the primary determining factor in the caliber/cartridge choices for the repros.

    If you really want one in 50-110 Express, you have two choices;

    1. Find and buy an original (very spendy[:0])

    2. Buy an old junker 1886 in one of the lesser calibers, and then send the gun off to Turnbull to be converted into a 50-110 Express. This is not a "cheap" option either, but it will undoubtedly cost you less $$$ than option 1.

    i found a 50-110 built on a win jap in a local store 30" oct don't know who built it the barrel lettering looks factory,,none of the major builders have any records of it

    I recall an outfit doing that conversion from a SHOT Show of some years ago. The literature is long gone and I do not remember the name.

    I think it was P.O. Ackley who pointed out that converting a sub-.50 1886 to one of the .50s was a big job because of the larger magazine tube required.

    Thanks, fellas. I'll contact Turnbull, and will ask about a repro (of his choice) to use as the donor rifle, and will pass back to you folks at the forum the info I glean from them.

    As Bert indicates, the reply won't be a pretty sight[:D]

    i thought that mine was a winchester custom shop but they said no as it did not have the CS marking..but they said it wasa win jap 1886 45-70 LW sporter it is total blue..turnbulls case color is to gaudy for me

    Understand about the case color. I'm looking for G/S mechanical work. No refinishing/cosmetics. And I've been recommended to use Doug T. and so I fired off an E-mail to them. As soon as I get any info, I'll post it. Best, Joe

    You might want to think about starting with a M-71 Winchester. I seem to recall the 348 has the same head size as the 50-110 and the modifications should be easier....I think.

    "dies from rcbs are 200.00 ".......or you can use the $30 .50/70 dies from Lyman (.50/70 base is larger but they still work well[;)]).

    turnbull usually has some rifles built ready for sale,you can get brass from starline..dies from rcbs are 200.00 some day i will load the brass and fire it if any buffalo decide to attack the corn fields

    Years ago there was a man by the name of Sam White that had an 86 in 50 cal. shotgun butt stock, pistol grip, octagon barrel with integral rib, tang sight, and flip up ring on the front. He sold it to am man from the east coast, I wish I even had pictures of the rifle. This was about 15, 20 years ago, and I am sure the rifle was original. Sam died shortly after and I don't know where his widow is. I do remember that he received $5000 for the rifle at the time, and the buyer drove out to WY and picked it up.
