Springfield 1884
I have a 1884 and courious about some markings on the rifel, s/n237594...markins on breach vp p..left side above trigger smp1889 and also on the stock the #104 has been stamped into the stock..any ideas?

Serial #237594 was manufactured in 1884 at the US Arsenal in Springfield, Mass. The initials in the wood are actually "SWP", not SMP, for US Government Inspector Samuel W. Porter. As the stock is dated 1889, it was probably refinished and restocked at the arsenal.
Does it have a slotted cleaning rod or a "ramrod bayonet"? A ramrod bayonet is pointed and slides out into a locked position under the barrel.
The "VP" means the rifle was "Viewed and proved", which was a safety and firing test. There should also be a small eagle's head stamped on the barrel.
The #104 is probably a rack or regimental number as Trapdoor Springfields were widely used by various state militias. Pictures would help but that basically identifies your rifle.0 -
