Large Ring - Mauser's with a Large ring have a thread shank diameter of 1.10" With 12 threads per inch. Across the face of the receiver will measure 1 3/8

Small Ring - Mauser's with a Small ring have a thread shank diameter of .980" With 12 threads per inch. Across the face of the receiver will measure 1 1/4.

The Mauser 98 and V24 would be a large ring types while the Mauser Models 93, 94,95,96 and Mexican Mauser's are small ring.

It refers to the external diameter of the receiver ring. All the original military Mauser rifles didn't have the same diameter receivers. The common G 98 rifle had the large diameter receiver ring. During the First World War the Germans brought out a lighter handier rifle, ( 98AZ ), that some U.S. collectors call the Engineers Carbine, with a smaller diameter receiver.

And then we have some of the Turkish Mausers that have a large ring with the small barrel threads.

And the G33/40 should be added to the small ring type.
