Rust removal ?, part ll
My posting of 8-27 is now locked due to the many (welcome) replies to my request for help. I just wanted to say "Thanks" for the many replies. I'm going to select one of the suggestions, give it a go, and I'll send a post of how it all worked out. Again, many thanks Jim

I made a mistake in removing rust from a scope ring recently.
Using a brass wire wheel, (Chinese from Walmart) the bluing came off along with the rust and some sparking ????.
I tested the brass wire which turned out to be magnetic.
The "brass" wire wheel turned out to be brass plated steel wire.0 -
You can buy in most hardware storesa product called "NEVR-DULL". It is a cotton wading in a can. It will remove surface rust without removing bluing...It will also polish any surface. After it dries...just wipe it off and then oil surface. This compound has what smells like turpentine in the wadding. I have used it for several YEARS. Use lightly on anything case-hardened...it will remove that type of finish if rbbed too hard. 0 -
It is common to find steel wire brushes with a brass-colored coating to prevent rust. It is probably cadmium plating. I have never seen a rotary brass brush, but they probably exist. Even if they do, power tools are not the best choice for removing rust without damage.
There is a product I see at gun shows that looks like a "Chore Girl" dish-washing aid, but it is far different and will not scratch a blue finish like a real "Chore Girl" sponge will. It is NOT steel wool (which has sharp edges on the stands, designed for cutting like sandpaper, etc.) and is very good for removing light rust with no damage to bluing. I do not know where to buy it online, but someone probably does.0 -

There are many products that will bust rust. Never use power tools when working their magic... 0 -
Select the most mild, and go from there. 0
