Marlin lever action safety

What did Marlin use for a safety on their lever action rifles before the hammer block design they now use? Was it the half cock position?

    Yes, the half-cock position on the hammer was the only manual safety.
    There are also two built-in safety features: when the lever is dropped slightly and the bolt is not fully locked (1) the trigger is prevented from being pulled by the trigger block, (2) the two piece firing pin is disengaged and will not strike the cartridge.

    Having the lever down is not a bad idea, when I finish shooting the levers I have I keep the lever down. I have alway read that half cock in not as safe as a lot of people would like it to be. I guess in both cases you could bump the hammer to full cock or close the lever on a hot round?

    Yes half cock was the "safe" mode. Probably better to leave the chamber empty if you are headed into the woods with it though.

    I can't recall his name, but there is a fellow who sells inserts to take the place of the push button hammer block - they look like screw heads and fit flush.
