.50 bmg rifle purchase
I am looking to buy a .50 cal but need some help from someone with lots of shots of various makes and models. Price always matters but i think i would prefer a barretts semi auto but for the money i could get lots more ammo ect if i chose something else. somebody please help. Are the bolt actions recoil that much heavier that you wont want to shooT? just looking for some suggestions.

I don't have a lot of experience with these, but I'll just comment that the guns themselves are probably best thought of as small artillery pieces!
They're generally really heavy and have substantial tank-like muzzle brakes to curb recoil. You're also probably not going to be shooting too many rounds at once, so I wouldn't worry too much about recoil.

Also, don't forget that you're going to want/need to put good glass on top of your gun, and a high quality scope that is suitable for long range shooting that will also handle .50BMG recoil could EASILY cost another $1000 (if not more).0 -
I considered the M82 or M107, but made the decision you are leaning toward and bought a Barrett M95 and a Cobb AR-50 for the price of one semi-auto. Also have a Boyes Anti-Tank rifle that has been converted to .50 BMG.
The M95 is a bolt action bull-pup rifle with a 5 roung mag and a full length barrell. It was developed for the Spanish Army IIRC, and is a well thought out long range rifle.
The Cobb looks like a first step towards an AR-Style auto-loader, but has, IMO, an awkward set up unless you have it fully sand-bagged, is quite a bit heavier than the Barrett, though it does have a 10 round mag.
The Boyes, if you can find one is just a lot of fun. A guy was looking to get pricing here a while ago ( http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=469618&SearchTerms=boyes ) on two that he had maybe for sale.
For my money, the Barrett is best for a functional long-range shooter. Recoil is not at all uncomfortable. It is more a good solid shove on the shoulder than anything, and the recoil pad and brake are such that you could really shoot the rifle all day, and you can usually find M-33 Ball for under $ 4.00 a round, so they are expensive, but not hugely expensive to feed.

Check out the A.L.S. (Advanced Long range Systems) Uppers. Thier 50 BMG uppers have set several world records. The last I heard the Serbu and the other upper makers couldn't make that claim. The A.L.S. is a bolt action single shot that is very fast. He uses PacNor barrels. The recoil is somewhere between a 12ga and a .308 in my opinion. Very pleasant to shoot and very accurate. The owner is also a great resource of information and a great guy to talk to. He is a one man operation so is very busy. His name is Darran.
