    Hello all,
I know this subject has been gone over many times but I have a question that I have not come across an answer to. Can a .300 Savage cartridge be shot in a rifle chambered for 308 Winchester or 7.62 Nato?

Can it? Depends what you mean by "can". . .[:D]

Is is theoretically possible to cram one in a .308 gun then fire it?
Maybe. . .but I don't think its a good idea to try this.

.300 Savage overall length is shorter than .308. This is problematic.

    No, its not.

While the .300 Savage is a sort of precursor to the .308, and they share similar case head dimensions and use similar caliber .308 bullets, they are NOT the same. The .300 has a shorter case neck and a shorter overall length.

    The 7.62x51 NATO is basically a low-powered .308 Winchester.

I checked the specs and they do not look like they are very far apart in dimensions but I am not a machinist.
Thanks in advance for any input,

This may be true, but it doesn't take a lot of difference in case dimensions to cause MAJOR problems.

If you want to fire .300 Savage, get yourself a .300 Savage gun. There are still plenty of them around, and new brass is available for reloading.

No, you can't fire the 300 savage in a 308 or 7.62 nato chamber safely. You CAN fire the 7.62 CETME round safely (those are a bit rare mind you) as it is a downloaded 7.62 NATO.

Some question the action strength and wisdom of firing 7.62 Nato in a 1916 2 lug spanish Mauser. I wouldn't want to give them a steady diet of high power max end loads, but using handloads and keeping near the start load levels, it has never been an issue for me.
