early naval german luger 9mm ser #3608 ADDED PICS
I have a German Luger that has been passed down in my family since my great great grandfather. It is a 9mm, 6" barrel, reverse safety and also has the hand safety. 100 & 200 range site. You can attach a stock. It is missing the front site piece. It is stamped DWM, the serial # is 3608. All numbers are matching with the exception of the clip(#'ed 3331). Underside of the barrel has a crown symbol and the letter "M"(i was told is a navy issue?), with ser. 3608 under that. 08 is stamped in 3 visible places on the gun. There are no other markings, #'s, or stamps on this gun. I took this to a gun appraiser(not a luger appraiser), he couldn't give me any info on the value of this gun. All he could tell me is he thinks the year is 1904 and the bluing is about 95% and it's in excellent condition. What I would like to know is an estimated value range of this gun, year, and why it doesn't have more markings?!?! And any other info would be greatly appreciated. Hello A navy Luger is very sort after and a 95% condition one is toward the top end of Value. However I am puzzled at the fact that you say the front sight is missing Is Just the sight blade Missing or is the barrel just the same size toward the front . The barrel Should be Tapered until the last 1/2 inch and then larger area to the muzzle with the sight installed in a cross-ways DOVE TAIL. Almost all LUGERS have a date either on the front receiver ring or in very small letters on the bottom left side of the Barrel Toggle assembly very near the take down lever / side plate area most likely yours is 1916 or 1917. The grip safety tells us it is a 1906 (sometimes called a 1904/06) Navy. The four digit serial number without the small letter under it tells us it is a lst issue. These did not have a date nor crest on the chamber. The proper magazine will have wooden plug in the bottom with concentric circles in the wood on both sides. There were 8,000 of these made and they are very sought after by collectors. This is simply a SWAG but I would say the value is in the $5,000 to $10,000 range.
Additional: It doesn't have more markings because DWM didn't put more markings on that model. If only the front sight blade is missing I believe that would be easy to replace with a correct one. I don't believe the Navy used a different front sight than the common army model.0 -
