Mauser 66
I have a customer who owns a Mauser 66 with 243 and 273 barrels. He would like to purchase a 5.6 x 52 barrel for this rifle and I guess you know the trouble I'm having putting my hands on one. Does anybody out there have any suggestions please? It would make me look like a hero to a new client if I can procure this for him. Thanks to all

The only 5.6x52 I know of is the 5.6x52R which is the European designation for .22 Savage High Power; a rimmed cartridge on the .30-30 head and rim diameter. Is that what he is wanting or is there another cartridge by that designation? (I know of the 5.6x50 which is kind of a super duper European stretch .222 Remington Magnum.) 0 -
No matter what Metric cartridge rifle barrel he's looking for, he will likely have to get it imported used from the fatherland. According to the Blue Book the 66's went out of production in the mid 90's. With all the legal jumping threw the hoops you have to do to import gun parts, find out if he is willing to shell out the big bucks to get his hands on a unknown quality used barrel, before going any further. 0 -
The Mauser 66 was offered in two 5.6mm cartridges: The 5.6X57 RWS and the 5.6X51 Vom Hofe. Both of these calibers fall into the Mauser 66 Group 1 cartridges, which means that since he already has a.243 rifle he won't need a new bolt (which is about 400 Euros). As rufe-snow has already stated; none of the 5.6 metric caliber rifles were ever imported into the United States so your chances of finding a 5.6mm barrel here are slim. The smaller calibre Model 66 imported in the USA was .22-250 and I have seen these barrels offered occasionally so your buyer may be better served settling for that caliber. Failing that you are going to have to start pounding away on the Internet hitting up various European dealers asking for a 5.6mm barrel. Used Mauser 66 barrel typically bring 500 Euros and up.
