Marlin 39A hickup

I recently picked up a NIB Original Marlin 39A # 913022**. A quick cleaning and off to the range. I love the weight, balance and feel of this little lever action and the reason I bought it was because of all the good things I have heard over the years. One problem, on every reloading, there is at least one empty brass casing stuck in the chamber during recycle, I pushed them out with a wood dowel and eyeballed, without disassembly, everything from a dirty chamber to the extractor. I tried recyling slower and more deliberately but after every third or fourth one another empty stuck I figured this to be a shoot any ammo type gun, but maybe I am wrong. The ammo de juor was Remington .22 Golden Bullet long rifle hollow points. 36 gr, round nose, 1280 fps. Is it something I missed or is this a normal hickup.

    Sounds like a chamber that has a light film of surface rust . I assume that even if a factory would test fire and clean the bore they might not take the time to use a LARGER THEN BORE SIZE brass brush to clean the chamber. . With a Model 39 it is hard to do any cleaning from other then the muzzle end get a 25 Caliber brush and bend 90 degrees in the middle Now get some Kroil or other good oil and use this brush to just clean the chamber.

    IF it was Remington ammo,,it might be the ammo specs...or lack of. Had some trouble with it,,on several guns..

    Clean the chamber and change ammo, sounds like an easy fix and a great place to start. I will be disappointed if it's the ammo, like I originally posted, I figured this to be a shoot any ammo lever gun

    ALL 39A'S are take-downs. You can clean the chamber from the breach.
    You might need to take it down and clean and lube it that way. If you didn't, there might still be some grease left from the factory.

    One issue I found with an older JC Higgins 31 that might apply here, the extractor groove on the barrel shank looked clean but it was not. Powder residue had over the years been compacted bit by bit by the spring powered extractor. This "tamping down" of the residue tended to fill the groove but it looked normal and of course lessened the purchase of the extractor on the case rim. A small metal pick removed it.

    Taking out the big bolt in the left side of the receiver allows you to pretty much break a Marlin 39 in half. From there you can remove the sliding bolt and have access to the chamber.

    +1 above, also try Blazer or CCI ammo they work better than Remington.

    Thanks for all the help, thats why I hang around. Trap55 that works. I'm looking forward to the next range session. It truely is a sweet little lever. I wonder if I can find another one ................
