win rifle. 03 in 22 win auto U.S. marked
i saw a winchester model 03 in 22 win auto with a U.S. flaming bomb on the rear top of the reciever, serial number was in the 98,000 range. was this rifle ever connected to the us government or is it a fake with a stamp added? thanks eastbank.

The U.S. government (U.S. Army) did indeed purchase a few Model 1903 rifles. Whether or not the one you saw was real or fake is unknown, but the odds higher that it was a fake.
Due to the rarity of the authentic martially marked specimens (and their premium value), the unscrupulous (dishonest) gun dealors out there have made many more fake guns than there are real ones.0 -
would there be any way to confirm for sure if its real or fake? i have seen other faked firearms and they looked real. this one looks real to me,but i am no expert. it can be bought for 500-600 dollars, thanks eastbank. 0 -
Yes... have the serial number researched to see if it is in the Springfield records.
What I can tell you is this... the serial number you mention is in the correct range for a martially marked Model 1903.
When verifying a martially marked Winchester, the specific style of the "U S" and flaming ordnance bomb is critical... most of the fakes were not stamped exactly in the same location and with the correct stamps. If you can post (or send me) clear close-up pictures of the martial stamps, I can most likely determine if it is real or not.
$500-600 is awfully cheap for an authentic martially marked Model 1903... and that in of itself is cause for suspicion.0 -
bert, i don,t think he knows what he has or he,s a good faker. i will not get to see it for a week or more. the U.S. and flaming bomb are stamped on the rear top end of the reciever with the U.S. in front of the flaming bomb.it is not a big stamp, thanks eastbank. 0 -
When you do get to see it, take some good pictures of the markings. 0
