Threading AK Cleaning Rods

Does anyone have experience threading steel rods, how difficult would it be to thread AK cleaning rods and or is this something that a gunsmith should do or could I do it by hand with the proper tools?

    I believe (but I am not 100% sure) that the standard threading for the cleaning rod is 4X.075, which is naturally a metric thread.

    Why don't you tell us what you are really up to? Are you sitting on top of 5,000 AKMs and they all need cleaning rods (of a very special length)? If you only need a few rods threaded you could do it yourself with the proper die and a hand tool. If you are talking about hundreds or thousands then I'd have a machine shop do it; either that or I'd need a lot of hell of a lot of cold beer out in the garage while I hand threaded 5,000 cleaning rods!

    Just several, but if its possible I could just do it by hand, but what hand tools would I need in order to do that?
    I do have a machine shop that I could take them to, but would prefer to do it myself if its possible.

    You'll need a set of metric dies and the handle, a vise and some cutting oil. We have guys here who are gunsmiths and master machinists who can probably walk you through the entire process of running thousands of them on an automated system, but for less than ten rods you should be able to do it yourself. Double check the thread size because I am not totally sure the one I gave you is correct.

    Cut one of the 15.75" AK cleaning rods at 3/8" off which removed the threads up to the first arch in the rod and now fits perfectly, but should hopefully still be able to thread the end okay up to the second arch in the rod, would really like to come across the right cleaning rods but this should work out alright for now.

    I've tried hand threading these and because they are someone springy, they are hard to hold and hard to thread.

    No one uses them anyway, so if you need them shorter, just cut to fit and use it like the decoration it usually is.

    I agree, was just hoping to thread it is all, but seems like a pita, but its a good project to for me try anyway and doesn't cost a whole lot and I can learn something about hand threading too while I am at it.
