45/70 appropriate load for H&R single shot

Most load manuals specify 'trapdoor', 'lever action' and 'modern bolt action' rifles with regards to load data for the 45/70.

For a break open H&R or NEF in 45/70, where would we say that rates? I'm thinking the 'lever action' category- it's not an antique trap door, but it isn't a bolt action either.

    When I loaded for my H&R 45-70, and wanted a hotter load, I would use the data for "lever action rifles". Would not take a chance on using the hottest loads in the break open rifle.

    i was shooting my 14" t/c yesterday using 60.0 h335,cci br-2 primer, topped with the 300 gr. nosler . got 2" 4 shot groups at 75 yds. thought that was ok but i can do better.

    Someone will undoubtedly correct me, but I believe the H&R will safely shoot any reload within reason that you can comfortably shoot in it. Recoil is a big factor in the 1871. When reloading, keep in mind that you have only two eyes, two arms and one life. Eddie

    That rifle will handle anything your shoulder can.

    I find that with a Missouri hard cast Buffalo #1 405 grain bullet, sitting on top of 34 grains of IMR 4198, I can do just about anything one wants to do with the 45-70. I shoot that in my Browning 1885 BPCR rifle, and can slam gallon jugs out to 400 yards, and I use it in my 1999 Vintage USRAC/Miroku 1886 takedown. I have a ladder sight on it, and can easily do a 9 " steel gong out to 200 yards, and 300 regularly. These loads are easy on the shoulder in these fairly heavy rifles.

    Yes it can be loaded much hotter...but why? If you have a testosterone overload, go ahead, and have at it.

    I always ran a steady diet of the lever action loads in my Buffalo Classic, without a problem.

    Anything? How about the Ruger #1 & #3 loads?

    Any ship can be a minesweeper ONCE. I think you can run that 45-70 as hot as you want for a while. I have seen a #1 Ruger in pieces, 2 rolling blocks, a ithaca converted double rifle, a TC pistol barrel. I'd stick to lever loads, its a 45-70 not a 458 mag.
