AK-47 Cleaning Rods
Isn't the standard length AK-47 cleaning rod supposed to be 15.75" being that the barrel is 16", or do certain AK-47 cleaning rods slightly vary in length from the 15.75" cleaning rod depending on the country of origin but being uniform to that country, is anyone familiar with this?

Specification length for an AKM cleaning rod is supposed to be set at 400mm OEM, but I have noticed that the cleaning rods used on the Hungarian AMD series are a bit longer than that. Keep in mind that in the world of Kalashnikovs NOTHING is set into stone, there are endless slight variations, even inside the same rifle series. 0 -
I have also noticed that there are slightly shorter variations as well and don't believe that they were out of spec either as they were in a batch and all the exact same length, have you run into this? 0 -
The rods are simply formed from metal stock and cut to spec length based on how many rods can be formed out of a length of stock. If the stock are not of the proper length (which is often the case) and the last rod off the line turns out to be a bit longer or shorter then spec they don't scrap the odd length rod, they just finish it and let it go. At teh Bulgarian Arsenal Factory I can tell you that AK production standards are up to rocket science tolerances! 0 -
Well supposedly these slightly longer and shorter rods will fit consistently into different country of origin AK's where others such as the 15.75" cleaning rods wouldn't, so that would rule out a spec problem being that apparently they were made to that spec, the problem is figuring out which rod goes with which AK.
For instance I would take the 15.75" Ak cleaning rod and it would fit in Chinese AK's, but then it would be 3/8" too long on European AK's.
Hmm, I dont know about Arsenal as they used to seem well made but Arsenals AK quality and consistency is definitely steadily declining from several nib Arsenal AK's that I have seen.0 -
For what its worth, 400mm = exactly 15.75 inches.
But jeez. . .its a cleaning rod. . .so long as it long enough to push/pull a patch through the full length of the barrel it doesn't matter if its off by a few mm either way.
As Mark says, the rifles themselves have enough variations in them (even within individual models) that I don't think anyone is really losing sleep over absolute consistency in cleaning rod length!0 -
Well one wouldn't think so, however the fact remains that the ends of the 15.75" AK cleaning rods wont clear the bottom of the front sight where the head of the AK cleaning rod is supposed to lock into place with some countries AK's. 0 -

Has nothing to do with the length, but rather the diameter, and/or how the recess in the front sight was finnished. Like what has been told to you. The AKM/AK-47 was designed with loose tolerences for two reason's. One is for reliability, and two for ease of manufacture. They are not exactly heirloom quality where the fit and finnish are micro spectacular.

No, it is the length, the diameter is the same as I have already measured that, but no matter, as I can have some cut and threaded. 0 -
Most AK47 types are re-manufactured from used parts. There's no telling because recycling to produce cheaper weapons for combat is key to saving on resources to further a campaign. Specs vary so consistency is a lot to ask for on an AK. If it works use it. 0 -
Consistency is relative to alot of things and like I said there are apparently some variations, go figure. 0
