feed problem on M-1 Garand
I purchased a M-1 for my brother and was test firing it today at the range. Problem...load it up with a 8-round en bloc clip and chamber the first round, bang. Bolt cycles as it should to pick up next round, then click. Bolt has not picked up the second round. Hand cycle the bolt and everthing works till the 8 rounds are gone. Happened every time. What is wrong? Thanks

You should give it a good cleaning. Make certain to clean up the bolt at the end of the gas rod. If its fouled things will go wrong... 0 -
Since you can hand cycle it and get it to feed correctly and going under the theory that the rifle has been correctly lubricated and that the problem is not with the clip; you may have a worn out operating rod spring. There are other possible issues like a worn follower arm or damaged bullet guide, but those are pretty rare. I'd be looking at the spring first. 0 -
I know the rifle is cleaned and properly lubed as I have built these for years. Just never had this problem. I have a number of spare parts so I will check the spring length against a new one and also inspect the other parts mentioned against good ones. Thanks 0 -
Also - check type of ammo used, M1 is sensitive to correct ammo useage.
Also - check gas plug to make sure it is tight, or if it has a poppet, that the poppet isn't stuck open - also gas port may be partly clogged.0 -
If I read this correctly, it is only the second round that does not feed and that the rest of the clip feeds normally after manually cycling to feed the second round. 0 -
'rsnyder55'...that is correct, only the second round. I would think if the plug is loose or there is gas blockage, the failure to feed would be more random. I will also try different ammo as I have a stash of OEM from WW2 to the '80's from various manufacturers. 0
