I just bought a marlin 39a and was wondering how old it is. The serial # is J8485. Thank you to all that reply.

I believe the buckhorn sight with sliding elevator was standard. I had one with a Lyman folding rear sight but it had been a replacement.

From the looks of the rifle pictured, that would be a pre-golden 39A or a model made in the late 40's or early to mid 50's. The sight on that rifle is the original. The folding rear sight came on newer models as in the 39A golden you mentioned made in the late 60's

The folding rear sight came on the Model 336 in 1971. It was probably close to that for the Model 39a.
