Colt Police Positive

The local pawn shop has recently added 4 Colt Police Positive revolvers to their display case. All show a patent date of July 4, 1905. One in particular is chambered 38 S&W, with a 6" bbl., s/n 866xx. This gun is parkerized. Could that be original? And if so is it rare and how would it effect value. The finish is 95% plus.

    I was visiting a lady in North Carolina and she showed me this revolver. It's a Police Positive in WRF. The serial # I believe is 32,3XX and the revolver is very tight, the blue's pretty fair and it seems to function O.K.
    She got the gun and holster from her late uncle and knows nothing about it. I'm clueless about Colts, but would like to know the approximate age and value of this one. Also, is the WRF chambering less common? Any information would be appreciated. She's not interested in selling it. Thanks.

    1928, Colt didn't want to mark their revolvers with S & W's name. So they called the .32 Smith & Wesson long cartridge, the .32 Colt New Police.

    Thanks for your prompt reply. I did not realize it was so old. It seems to be still vey tight, and in good condition, given the age. I will try to find the right cartidge this weekend if it is carried in a local shop.

    .32 S&W Long ammo can be tough to find, and $$$ when you find it. FYI you can shoot .32 ACP rounds out of a revolver chambered for .32 Long. I've done it many times. I wouldn't try it with a cheap breakopen "suicide special", but your Colt is a quality gun and should handle FMJ .32 ACP ammo without a problem. .32 ACP ammo is much easier to find, and cheaper than .32 Long.

    Now I am curious what the value of this gun might be. It is blued with hard platic checkered grips, and metal colt medalions on each side of the grips.

    You could check the two large on-line gun auctions. Some times Police Positives show up for sale. Don't pay any attention to the asking prices, only the actual selling price(s).

    Unfortunately .32 revolvers aren't hot sellers nowadays, when everybody and their brother are packing hi-cap semi-autos.

    If your revolver is factory original and in excellent condition it might have some demand/value to a Colt collector. If you could post some quality photos some of our Colt folks might be able to assess it's value. This link gives instructions for posting photos in the forum.

    Question to rufe-snow. Would that serial # be a Police Positive or a Police Positive Special, since both were made in .32 police?
