Best 22LR Ammo For New Shooter

Looking for accuracy and not cheapest price to instill confidence.
Any good books on beginning rifle shooting? My 12 year old daughter likes to read!

    I have had good luck with the Winchester 333 bulk boxes that Walmart sells. It's descent quality stuff. Locally a box runs just under $12.00, not including taxes. It seems to be more reliable then the bulk boxes of Remington and Federal. Also the big hollow point is quite effective on bunnies.

    The baseline .22 lr around here is Wolf Match Target or SK Jagd Standard Plus (same load, different box.)

    If an auto, try a good plated bullet like CCI Mini Mag.

    While it seems that every flipping .22 has a different favorite, I have had VERY good luck with Federal Champion Target STANDARD VELOCITY. It is not match ammo, but darned close. Dick's Sporting goods, about $20/500 rounds in 50 rd boxes. My match ammo is either Wolf, Lapua, or Nobel R-50, and it is MORE more than that.

    For a REALLY beginner shooter, it almost doesn't matter WHAT ammo you use. Pretty much ANY 'target' type ammo is going to be a good bit tighter than the shooter, particularly at 50 feet or less.

    Unfortunately, the ammo you describe (which Federal used to sell as its #714) hasn't been in production for about two years, and supposedly never will be again. If you look at the Federal website, its not listed anymore.

    This **WAS** great stuff; supposedly it was over-run lots of its match-quality "gold medal" or lots that didn't quite meet spec for one reason or another. The likelihood of you finding any on some dusty back shelf of a Dicks' now is basically zero. Any ammo like that would have been cleaned out during the Obama ammo panic last year.

    There are three current production "Federal Champion Target" (ie low cost).22LR ammo types: High velocity sold lead 40 grain, copper plate 36 grain, and the bulk-packed "automatch" ammo. Of the three, the automatch is closest to the older #714.

    If you like, you can buy effectively the same low-velocity 40 grain solid lead ammo (or even better) as the Federal "Gold Medal" 922A, but at about $4/box instead of $2/box. That makes it slightly less expensive than the Wolf/Jagd ammo (though probably not quite as good).

    In general, the "problem" with .22 ammo right now is that the makers have become pretty smart. . .the ammo is generally priced appropriately, meaning that UNLIKE the case maybe 5-10 years ago, you pretty much get what you pay for nowadays.

    Another not super-duper expensive brand you might look at is the standard CCI "blue tag" .22LR ammo. Again, not quite match quality, but pretty good for the price. The green tag match ammo is better. . .and costs much more.

    Have been using Federal 36 grain copper plated hollow points 550 to a box at Walmart $18.97 a box. Cheap enough for my son to practice with, he is 11 yrs old. When he gets better we will start to try different more expensive target grades. He hopes to move on to bullseye competition someday.

    I find Federal Champion HV and target ammo to be quite accurate in my target 22's at about $22 a brick. If you want better accuracy then Wolf Match at about $6 a box is very good

    My son and his wife and children burns a lot of bullets (try thousands per year) on PDogs out here with both his S&W revolver and a Ruger 10/22. In both he gets great accuracy and less misfires per box witht he bulk Federals from Walmart than most others sold in the larger bricks. [8D]

    Fadala's "Book of the 22" is a great one. Other than that I meant to also post that my tests of over 20 brands of 22 ammo showed that for the most part the sub sonic and match ammo gives best results when I do my part. However the difference between that and the Feds I mentioned above isn't really that great until I start reaching out to the 75 yds and beyond realm. To instill confidence start with bigger targets at closer ranges for your daughter and gradually move them out to distance while reducing the size of the bull. I've found with three kids, serveral grandkids and soon ggrand kids, that graphic practice is often the best, such as water filled pop cans, or eggs set in front of milk jugs filled with water. Or cookies set up as targets. [8D] Kudos on your care and selection for your daughter and good luck.[^]
