Unknown .380
I found a .380 semi auto in my dads basement. It doesn't have any markings on it other than on tear town on the slide I found the number 297 stamped. Other than that, nothing no brand or anything. As far as age, I just know my dad got it in the 70s. The exterior is rusty but on tear down the internals are clean. Any one have any idea as to the brand or age of this?

It's a German military pistol that was used during W W II. It's known as the Sauer 38-H. Unfortunately it has led a really hard existence, since coming back from the fatherland with some GI as a souvenir at the end of the war. Apparently some old world craftsman got his hands on it, engraved it and fitted it with home made grips. Here is a photo of one of the original 38-H's I got off the net. Yours is the later version without the manual safety on the slide. 0 -
It certainly looks like a JP Sauer 38H, late, late WW II version without either slide safety or decocking lever.
Sauers in .380 are rare and to see one that late in a losing war other than .32 caliber is very unusual.0 -

Regarding this there might be two possibilities 1), The Old World Craftsman tried to convert it to a .380 when he was doing his other handywork on it? 2), it was put together from leftover parts that were lying around the Sauer plant, when the krauts threw in the towel during the spring of 1945. If it doesn't have a serial number number, number 2 seems most likely.0
