shortening barrel on a rfle/shotgun combo?

Saw this and thought it would make a good back pack gun. My question is (not that I would want to) if I shortened the barrel the 16 inches would it be illegal because it doubles as a shotgun, or would it be OK because it doubles as a rifle?

Since the barrel is rifled as .45 Colt, just with a .410 length chamber, it ought to be ok at 16". But I would not want to have to pay the lawyer to argue that in court if the feds took an interest.
I think I could pack 18" about as easy as 16".0 -

You would be correct. No one gets busted for a Taurus Judge being too short a barrel.0
