Your opinion on "Porting"
I am going to buy a S&W model 627 Pro .357 Mag. I have been thinking about having it Magnaported. I would like to know your opinions on Magnaporting...ie is it worth the money? How good does it work? Thanks.

I had a glock 22-C which is a ported pistol and I hated it. Every time I shot it I ended up covered in powder and bits of lead. However I have a couple shotguns that are ported and love them.
Does make it a little more difficult to clean the gun as you have to clean out the ports not just the barrel.0 -
Magnaporting is effective at reducing recoil on heavy caliber firearms, but I am not convinced it is actually needed for a full sized .357 pistol. The 627 is a big heavy pistol which I believe has a 5-1/2" barrel, unfluted cylinder and a full under lug, all of which will soak up quite a bit of recoil. Unless you are planning to fire a large number of full house loads out of the pistol on a regular basis it may not be worth the money to have it ported. I'd be more inclined to suggest Magnaporting for .44 Magnum and .45 Colt pistols. 0 -
IMHO, yes it is worth the extra money. I have a .44 Mag revolver and .45 ACP ported ... and both shoots with lesser muzzle jump than my 9MM.

I have several ported pistols, purchased them that way but have never had one done that I already own. For background, I shoot everything from .25ACP to 500 S&W.
A KelTec P32 in 32ACP, ported by APW. Essentially, two ports on top of the barrel/slide to reduce flip. I have another, unported P32 and I cannot tell any difference between the two.
A KelTec P40, Ported by APW with three ports on each side of the barrel/slide. Really makes a difference with this very light pistol in a caliber that the manufacturer ceased producing because of the recoil and propensity of people to limp wrist it. I have shot other, non ported versions and this one really makes a difference. Now, on the other hand, using the same platform (switch barrels) I shoot .357 Sig that is NOT ported and the recoil is about the same as the ported .40 S&W.
A Ruger P90 with a ported .400 CorBon barrel. I have shot a similar pistol without the porting and the porting on mine definitely decreases the tendency to rise, I find I am able to bring it back on target far more quickly.
A Taurus Model 44 in .44 Mag. This gun was slightly easier to shoot with the porting but the recoil was actually on par with my Ruger Redhawk and my S&W M29's with similar barrel lengths. The downside of this gun was that the porting kept blowing the scope to pieces, even with a sunshade type protection on it. And, that's an expensive loss.
A S&W Model 500 with 8" barrel. Ported. I've never shot one without the porting nor do I care to unless I get to use my own lighter loaded rounds. And, then, why not just shoot the .44Mag.
I Kinda agree with the comment that a .357 doesn't need or really benefit from porting. MagNaPorting typically works well on larger calibers but I don't really think it is necessary on a .357 mag. I know it is completely useless on a .32ACP .......

I have a 5.5" Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag. it is Magnaported and in my opinion has probably 40 to 50% less felt recoil and muzzle flip then my 7.5" SBH without the porting, making it easier for me to shoot more rounds per session at the range. Wait and shoot the 627 first, if see if it's recoil and muzzle flip is a problem for you. Everyone handles recoil and muzzle flip [ or rise] differently if it is a problem for you, then go for it, get it ported, it will probably help you out. 0 -
Agree with basically everything written above (works better on larger/heavier calibers, and that personally speaking, I wouldn't port a big heavy .357 gun).
Also porting increases shooting noise somewhat, and muzzle flash quite a bit, both of which .357s already have more than many other calibers.0 -
The only gun I have ported is a Thompson Contender in .357 Herrit with a 10 inch barrel. That gun definitely needs it. I can't see porting a .357 magnum but to each their own. 0 -
I would not port a N-frame .357 revolver. Not necessary, and not worth the money for this particular gun IMO. 0 -
I had a Taurus .44 special Titanium that was factory ported and when using cast bullets, the accuracy was horrible. Using jacketed or plated bullets it shot like a dream. I was told the porting was "shaving" the lead bullets causing them to fly erratically. I switched bullets and problem solved. Just a thing to consider if you shoot cast.
