308 in a 25-06 Ruger
I friend of mine was sighting in his Ruger 77 with some other men at the range and thinks he chambered a factory 308 round in his 25-06 stainless Mark II, long story short he's fine but the rifle blew out the floor plate the extractor is bent and broken off the retaining ring, the bore is clear however the bolt cannot be opened so does any one have any experience or suggestions on how to get the bolt open for inspection and more importantly what are the chances of this rifle even being salvageable? should it be sent off to Ruger or is there some other shop better suited to this kind of work.any input would be appreciated Thanks

This gun should be delegated as a wall hanger and example on gun safety. With that much damage I would take any good parts off gun and chalk it up to experience. 0 -

depending on how 'locked up' it is you may have to unscrew the barrel. you probably have a very expensive wall decoration. 0 -
I doubt he can get it fixed these days. Ruger or a gunsmith would be too worried about getting sued if they missed something that was "strained." Once upon a time it would have been closely inspected and repaired but now it would probably cost too much and leave the shop worried about their liability. 0 -

How do you know the bore is clear without being able to look down it with the bolt removed? I doubt it matters much, sounds like the rifle is destroyed and doubtful Ruger or any gunsmith would attempt repair, most of the critical parts have been stressed and damaged beyond safe use. Luckily no one was injured, too bad about the transition from shooter to wallhanger.[:(][:(]
Any chance you could post some pics for educational purposes? Maybe others can learn from this and prevent a future occurrence.
Send the gun back to Ruger. They have a reputation of sending the owners a new gun to replace the damaged one.0 -
My gunsmith showed me a Rem 700 270 that someone fired a 308 in. He took the barrel off removed all the brass casing and put it back together and it functioned OK. The .30 bullet swaged itself down to .27 and was not in the barrel. 0 -
As to knowing the bore is clear I ran a cleaning rod down the barrel. without knowing the bolts relation to the chamber face I'm not sure unscrewing the barrel is an option unless the bolt is first removed besides I'm not equipped for such work. as I said my friend "thinks" it was a 308 round and it would be best to know for sure since the other possibility is a defective factory 25-06 round. however unlikely that may be. Still looking for any other options thanks to all 0 -
About 40 or 45 yr. ago a frend did that,I don"t rember what brand of gun it was but I know the firing pin went through his nose and took out his eye.he still lived to a ripe old age,but he was a lot more carefull. 0
