Sorry but I don't know the thread specs but you want a die, not a tap unless you are threading the frame instead of the barrel. Inside threads are cut with a tap, outside threads are cut with a die or on a lathe. You can remove the old barrel and measure the threads with a thread gauge.

I need a tap to clean up the threads in an otherwise good receiver. I have the barrel but dont know how to calculate the tpi spec.

Go down to your local hardware store and buy a thread gauge. Should cost less than $5.00 for one. Or you can also go to a nearby machine shop with the barrel and have them measure the threads with their thread gauge.

Winchester favored 16-tpi on most of their barrels. What I do not know is the shank diameter for a Model 90 barrel. I suspect that it might be the same as a Model 1885 low-wall No. 1 barrel though, which is .845"

The NRA Gunsmithing Guide shows the 1890 Winchester with a barrel shank of .623" diameter with 24 TPI. MSC Industrial Supply Co lists a 5/8-24 tap. Item number is 65062648 for a bottoming tap. Info is from a 2006 catalog but they have a web site and give extremely fast service.

    .623-24 or 5/8-24. The .002" shouldn't make any difference.
If the thread is too tight, get the 5/8-24 die also.
MSC would be the place to look if you can't get it locally.
