Cleaning a .22

Can anyone recommend a good cleaning procedure for a .22. I'm having a hell of a time getting a patch down the barrel of my CZ .22 rifle, and for that matter my S&W M17. The jags are too tight with a patch, and I don't want to chance busting something off in the barrels.

    Are you SURE you are using the right type /size /thickness patch most 22 patches for a JAG are about the size of a DIME larger type patches go through a end like a GIANT needle EYE with the patch folded and threaded through the hole.

    Get a .22 bore snake and clean it from the breech end to the muzzle.

    Same as an other rifle, just make sure your rod is less than .22 in diameter and you use smallbore .22 patches.

    Full-sized rifle patches are too big for .22s

    I use a bore snake in combination with a foaming cleaner.

    I guess I have been using too large a patch,( about an inch square ),

    Get an OTIS cleaning system for 22 cal. Works like a champ [:)]

    I ran into the same problem myself. As mentioned, it's too large a patch. And they're also right about the boresnakes. They work GREAT

    cleaning a 22 is like birthday cake for a diabetic. it is unnecesary and probably harmful. the 22 does not burn hot enough to melt the lead, ergo no leading. the primer is non-corrossive--no problem. the bullet uis waxed or greased- the bore is protected. you put a rod into the bore and you are wearing the lands at the muzzle--not good. the only thing to clean is the action especially in autos, that fills with powder residue. should be cleaned every 500 rds or so by blowing out with either compresed air or pressurized liquuid.

    I use a .22 size cleaning rod, bore brush and for the patches just cut down a normal size patch but so that it fits snug in the bore and will work just fine.

    I use a one piece carbon fiber rod and a 22 cal mop when I shoot my bolt action 22 target rifles, and I do it infrequently and dry with NO solvents, mainly to remove powder residue and ONLY from the breech end, never the muzzle end if it can be avoided
