Winchester 70 pre 64 stock

I have read most the older post I can find about not refinishing original stocks, or maybe use boiled linseed oil on a stock to freshen up the flaking. I have 3 standard models that are in original condition with steel butt plates. One of them is 1938 30:06 clover leaf with a factory notch and has factory lyman peep installed. A 1949 .270 and 1950 30:06. The stocks need freshened up from flaking near the butt also the blueing on some of the barrels is wore thru. In one case surface rust on the barrel. The rust will not clean off with gun oil. I want to keep these guns, let the kids have them. Will I hurt the value or collect-ability if I get the actions, barrels, trigger guards re-blued? My guess is these guns are worth between 9-1200 each now and most likely will stay comparable at that range. The guns calibers are not rare nor are they super grade. Thanks

    You can remove the rust with oil soaked 0000 Steel Wool. The oil will keep the steel wool from removing the blue but will remove the rust. Anything you do to refinish the stock or metal will hurt the value as a collector's item. As time goes by any pre-'64 model 70 will become more collectable. A little linseed oil on the stock might not hurt but someone more expert than I will have to address that. Reblueing will kill all collector interest.

    You can remove the surface rust as Herschel says but DO NOT touch anything else. There are already too many model 70's that have been "freshened up" and they are worth about half as much as they were before.

    Do you think it would be fine to take the stock off to be able to properly get to all the nooks and crannies under the barrel ect.. For cleaning purposes?

    There will be no harm in removing the stock and no evidence that it was done if you use the proper size, hollow ground screwdrivers. Buggered up screw heads are evidence that someone has been tinkering with the gun and makes people wonder what might have been damaged on the inside.
