    I agree I was able to contacted her Directly when her last post. The one Spider eluded to appeared. I Tried to get her to reconsider leaving This Forum . No dice [:(] It is a Shame to lose someone like her. because of a difference of opinion. I think as we get older we start to have stronger and stronger convictions in our Knowledge /opinions . This leaves us unwilling to accept that their may be MORE THEN ONE correct answer to any question. We all deal with the facts at hand but sometimes because of Memory or the chance records from one ledger may be in error does not make one person Right and another Wrong. . I go to this Forum for information on questions I have and desire of knowledge on subject I know little about because it is The best on the internet. I do think ASK the EXPERT says it all . but even the most expert can disagree with another most expert. Just don't let it be come personal a PISSING contest does no one any good.& drives people away.     Pauline was an asset. I can think of no one that presented such credentials.

    ..and all it would have taken [to keep this forum doubly blessed] was to have compared notes off line. Sheesh!

    I've read some of her posts and she seemed to go out of her way to be argumentative with Bert, which I find extremely irritating and not just because it was Bert. I had to boot one know it all off the site over the weekend because he did nothing but pick fights with other members and no one could tell him anything (hell, that guy was worse than me [;)]). I understand that she works (or worked) at the factory, but current employment alone would not automatically make someone an expert in the subject of antique Winchesters. Winchester has changed hands numerous times and it is my understanding that the HARD factory records are in Cody under what is basically lock and key. You have to be a big shot in the Winchester collector community to even get to see those records, much less have access to them for research purposes. Expert opinions are just that: Opinions, but you have to consider their source and the good folks at Cody are not inviting Bert out there just to unfold chairs in the dinning room for their annual banquet, he is out there based on what he knows. There are a dozen guys in this forum who I consider to be true experts in their field: Bert, Perry, Judge Colt, Iconoclast and several others, and if they state something in their area of expertise as a fact then I am going to take their word for it. I don't have a lifetime to study up on Colts so that I could possibly argue with Judge Colt about the width in the slot of the screw used in the stock of a 1959 Colt Python verses the slot width in the screw used on a 1974 vintage Python. The whole point of Ask The Experts is to let some poor slob spend a lifetime studying up on specific firearms and then when we have a question about that particular gun we just pick his brain for the information that we need. Since the serious study of Colts, Winchesters, modern and antique ammunition, M1 Garands, High Standard pistols, ect. takes decades of study, this is a quick and easy way to learn something.

    I am going to state this one last time... I have absolute proof of what I stated in that topic thread concerning the dates of manufacture for the three serial numbers in question. I offered to send copies of the original factory records to Pauline, and she refused my offer... you can figure out why on your own.

    At the time that topic string was on-going, I was in Cody, at the Museum (working in the Research office).

    There are some who read/follow this forum that believe I am abrasive and/or a know-it-all... in reality, I am neither. There are many more who frequent this forum that know me personally, and I sincerely doubt that any of them would agree. Yes, I do speak authoritively at times as it applies to Winchester historical facts, but only because I have access to the actual factory records... and they are not disputable... they simply are what they are.

    I too am sorry that Pauline decided to end her participation on this forum... she definitely has a surperb level of knowledge as it pertains to Winchester engraving, and the Custom Shop practices in the later years of Winchester's existance.

    I've met Bert in person--he is hardly abrasive. If anything he is a walking, talking, encylopedia of information regarding Winchesters and is extremely friendly & approachable even at a busy gunshow. He has answered some of the oddest questions about Winchesters and other guns here and I wish I could retain 1/10 of the knowledge he has regarding guns from the 1800's. It's sad that Pauline wouldn't at least take the opportunity to show Bert her info and take a look at his--what would it hurt?

    Real experts always have the time to learn something new and knowing Bert as I do; if another collector came up to him and told him that he'd just learned about some new and previously uncatalogued screw used in the rear sight of a Highwall, Bert would probably drop everything for the next four hours to talk with him about it. When you already have full access to the actual factory records, records which most of us will never get a chance to see, much less study, and you are all ready fully familiar with the contradictory records being presented to you, then what is the real point of going on? Bert clearly said that he knew all about her records and he offered to send her copies of his own, which are right out of the vault at Cody. I know my M1 Garands but I am hardly in a position to question someone like Scott Duff, who had absolute unlimited access to the records and firearms collection M1s at the Springfield Armory. Her area of expertise is actually in engraving and while that is interesting in and of itself, it is a subject of Winchester firearms collecting that is very seldom asked about in this forum...A Colt engraving expert would get us much more traffic.
