1911 45 acp

Any opinion on what this pistol is worth? this 45 was passed down to me from my grandfather who used it in WWI. The left side of the slide is stamped with the following: PATENTED Apr 20 1897, Sept.9.1902, Dec.19.1908, Feb.14.1911 under the dates it says COLT'S PT.F.AMFG.CO. and UNITED STATES PROPERTY, it also has two ordinance insignias stamped on the left side of the slide. On the right side of the slide along with "model of 1911 U.S.ARMY" it has an eagle stamp and serial #116914

It aslo has a lanyard clip right on the handle and magazine.

    Can anyone direct me to a resource, or do y'all have preferences I might use, that compares 1911's. I'm looking to purchase. Thanks in advance.

    Let me clarify...I am looking for an oranges to oranges comparison of 1911's for reliability, durability, cost, and preformance. The $1500.00 a top price allowed by spouse.

    Good luck with that.... I went thru the same thing a month ago - never found a single authoritative source. I read everything I could find about various manufactureres and models, as well as some few comparisons among them. Then hit the forums, looked for individual owner comments. Best I came up with was STI, Dan Wesson, Sig and Springfield for new pistols in that price range.

    But maybe someone here has a source.

    The intended use will have bearing on your choice. I have been shooting 1911's for 40 Plus years and also have a small collection of 1911's. 95% are Colts . I have had other makes But IN MY opinion unless you want to go with a Custom Pistol The Colt series 70 is as good as it gets. It will never Lose value if taken care of and If you want a TRUE Custom Pistol it is a great Platform to start with . I have one that has been MODIFIED to a Match Pistol with over 350,000 rounds through it . Pictures available on request or double click on my user name and look at the post "I will show you mine" I have some pistols listed there it will also show you other members pistols."PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN"

    +++++++1 and ditto![^] Go with Colt and you will never go wrong! $1500 should get you a nice Model 70 in great condition, perhaps even with box and papers. You can shoot it for the rest of your life, hand it down to your children, and it will do nothing but appreciate in value. Best gun I ever bought was my first Colt, a Pre-70 with two small bb's under the serial number. Didn't know what it was at first but found out later that it was the factory model workup to the Model 70. 45+ years later it is still a tack-driver and will go to my oldest grandson.[^]

    You're never going to find such a comparison.

    There are **FAR** too many different types of 1911s on the market right now for any such comparsion to be done in a meaningful way. A test like that would require literally dozens of guns fired with tens of thousands of rounds. And even if it were done, the makers do change their builds and parts from time to time. There is no guarantee, for example, that a 2010 Kimber is going to be identical to a 2008 Kimber.

    I'd say your best bet is to figure out what exactly you want to use the gun for, then pick its configuration. Once you do that, you can narrow it down to a few models in your price range.

    As to specific brands, I do agree with Perryshooter and Gary. For the money its pretty hard to go wrong with an original Colt series 70 gun.

    You can argue about whether or not its absolutely the "best" but its probably amongst the best for its cost, and so long as you don't abuse it, it will never go down in value.
