S&W 669 Question ???

OK ,
this one has me ?
a s&w model 669 (9mm) looks to be in great shape , But :
apx. one out of ten times you fire this , the hammer stops at the first (safety?)? notch , hence it is sticking out (back) of the slide by a quartert inch or so ? then when you sqeeze the trigger , it will then follow thru as normal ???
Any Ideas ???

    The hammer is normally flush with the back of the slide. Pulling the trigger back a fraction of an inch moves the hammer back to the first notch so that you can manually cock it with your thumb for the first shot.

    Now, I am not sure what you mean by normal. The 669 is DA/SA Only; the hammer should remain fully back after each shot, it shouldn't follow the slide forward
    ever.

    I'd look at the hammer/trigger notches/engagement. Hope this helps.

    Lets try this again !
    Gun Empty , safety Off , squeeze trigger , hammer falls , One out of Ten Times the hammer stops on the first (safety)? notch instead of all the way (as to fire)?

    Do you have the magazine in or out of the gun? S&W auto's have a magazine disconnect safety that engages if the mag is out. Maybe something is hanging up inside?

    Mag is in , and yes , these Smiths have a 'mag safety' , will NOT work at all with mag out !

    The 669 is a Gen 2 S&W semiauto but the fact that your hammer has a safety notch for it to be catching in indicates that you actually have a Gen 1 part in there. Due to the firing pin block design this notch became unnecessary beyond Gen 1 pistols, but it's not uncommon at all to find these hammers in Gen 2's assembled while S&W was using up their stock of Gen 1 items. In fact, I had one with this same condition many years ago.

    At one time I was a S&W certified armorer but no longer have the need. It's been awhile and I'm unable to diagnose your specific problem off the top of my head, however I can tell you that one way or another dropping in a correct Gen 2 hammer should clear up this issue.

    In addition it would smooth out the trigger pull. Notice that annoying 'click' as the hammer passes the safety notch point during a DA pull? ARGH!

    the hammer also stops in that rear position when the decocker is used. sounds familiar, like spooge and dirt in the innards. give the decocker and firing pin a good wash,blow and lube. do the same to levers and their channels in the receiver. better would be to strip, clean, lube, and assemble.

    I have had the same exact problem with a 3rd gen. 6906 and at one time was a certified S&W armorer for the PD. As familiar as I was with the internals I could not diagnose and fix the problem so off it went to S&W. They repaired it and returned it within a week without an explaination. Sorry I can't help.
