Winchester 94 Front Sight/Accuracy

I have a Model 94 Carbine made in the early
1950s that has a ramp front sight. I would
like to leave the ramp, but change the front
sight insert. What is the size of that dovetail?

Also, what would be some good recommendations on
brand as I want to stay with something that looks
traditional?

Another reason for the sight change is I need
one that will allow the rifle to shoot 150 gr
ammunition. Even with the rear sight at its
lowest setting now, this rifle groups 150 gr bullets
about 6-8 inches high at 50 yards. I know I need a taller
front sight but have never encountered this problem
with my other Model 94 carbine made in 1929.

Any help is appreciated.

    The sight dovetail slots on all Winchester models are .375" (3/8").

    Your 1929 vintage Carbine most likely has the traditional carbine ladder sight, which sits lower in the folded down position than a 22-series rear sight does with the elevator in its lowest postion.

    As a point of interest, I believe that all pre-64 Model 94 Carbines have sights that are regulated for 170-grain factory loads.

    I don't know when the change was made, but the carbine front sight ramps were once integral with the barrel, and were changed to one that was silver-soldered on (this was still pre-1964). I once knocked the ramp off a '94 barrel while changing the front sight blade. I had supported only the barrel and not the ramp because I thought it was the 'integral ramp' type.
