Lever Action Winchester Model 54 22 Hornet

I have a Winchester Model 52 22 Hornet that was passed down to me by my father. I haven't been able to find a single model like this. My search began because I was looking for a magazine so I didn't have to load a single bullet each time. This seems to be an uncommon variant of the Winchester Model 54 Bolt action rifle.

    Hello, and WELCOME to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    Are you sure it is a model 52, and not a model 43?

    If the barrel says model 52 on it, I wold be inclined to think it is eitheer a mis marked Model number, or has been messed with.

    You say lever action? Or do you mean turn bolt.

    We really need to see some very clear, close up pictures of the rifle, and markings to help you. Here is a sticky that describes how to post photo's.

    As far as I know, Winchester did make a Model 54, but it was a bolt action not a lever action. They also did have a Model 65 I believe that was Chambered in 218 Bee, but I never knew they had any lever action chambered in 22 Hornet...especially with a tubular magazine. I have been corrected before with Winchester facts, and just very recently. Which by the way Bert...that was some of the best reading on the Spruce Guns, that I have had in a while.

    Looks an awful lot like a Savage 95 or 98 with a Winchester barrel on it . A Mod.54 Winchester lever was chambered in .22 Hornet and 218 Bee and perhaps others .

    Fascinating.
    The rifle is a Savage model 95 or 99.

    The barrel looks like it might be off a Winchester 54, all right.
    If it is a Hornet, you are not much likely to fix up a magazine for the little Hornet in the long Savage action. Those rotary magazines are pretty specific to the original caliber.

    The reason you have not been able to find another rifle like it, is because it is not a factory orignal gun. Somebody cobbled together parts from at least two different firearms makers.

    The barrel is a Winchester Model 54 (late production). The lever and stocks are from a Savage Arms Model 99. The action is the tough part to identify, and I am not sure what it is.

    You will not find a magazine for it, as it appears to have been built/modified to be a single shot action.

    BUBBA MUTT[:0][:(] receiver looks like it had that cheap gold wash they used to sell in kits over a very crude attempt of engraving receiver. .

    You have a custom rifle there, a model 99 Savage that has been rebarreled with a Winchester model 54 barrel. I'm not very knowledgable about engraving, maybe Pauline can identify the work.
    When that gun was done, it was a work of art. With that said, it's very hard to put a price on a one of a kind item like this, and I'm not going to venture a guess. There are many qualified folks on this forum, and they'll be able to give you more information.

    Thanks for all the feedback. I really hadn't thought of it for collection value anyway. I still shoot it and plan to let my soon shoot it as well. Not having the capacity for a magazine is a real bummer.
