gun from American Gun Co., New York

I have a gun that says on it " American Gun Company, New York ". On the top of the gun on the barrel it says "genuine armory steel choke bored". I believe the gun is a 16 ga. On the butt plate it says "fajen". I guess this could be a different butt plate. From what I can learn the gun appears to be around 100 years old. It is in excellent condition. The forearm has carving on it and it is hammer type. Wood is exceptionally nice, barrels inside are excellent, no pitting, etc. When the gun is closed, it snaps.
Could I shoot this gun with our regular shells or would I have to find something else? I would like to get any information as to when gun was made and its value, etc. Thanks.

    The gun is what is commonly referred to as a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun A "Trade Brand Name" shotgun is one that was made by a major maker for and was sold by a wholesale or retail dealer who chose the name to go on the gun. Guns with the name AMERICAN GUN CO NEW YORK were made by the Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1931) for and were sold by the H & D Folsom Company of New York City, a large wholesale and retail sporting goods dealer. Incidentally, H & D Folsom owned Crescent Fire Arms and whatever Folsom wanted, Crescent made. And what they wanted was a lot of inexpensive (cheap) shotguns fast.The butt plate on your gun is an after market replacement. Value? The value of these old guns depends on their condition, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood as well as the mechanical condition. Values can run as high as $100 for one that appears to have come out of the factory yesterday afternoon to as low as $10 for a rusty, rotten, incomplete piece of junk fir only for parts or a tomato stake. Most sell on the various auction sites for $50 to $75. When made? Give us the serial number (found just behind the trigger guard) and we can tell you when the gun was made. The gun was not designed for modern high pressure smokeless powder ammunition, 3 inch or magnum shells or steel shot. Can you shoot it? Can't say without a physical examination. Take the gun to a qualified gunsmith for a checkout.
