Where is the cheapest place to buy brass-cased, non-corrosive ammo for my ar-15 chambered in .223. I dont want any steal cased ammo. I also dont plan on reloading this round. I would like to buy half a case or a full case. FMJ or SP. Thanks for your time and help. 0 -
I use the 115 fmj for practice since it is cheaper. PMC or Blazer usually $10 or $11 bucks a box. 0 -

State "what" you want to do with the ammo. It does matter quite a bit. Modern HD and CC ammo is great stuff and many types available, and it would make a heck of a difference in 9mm vs. a 115 gr. FMJ.
If target, low vel., maybe you want to use a cheaper lead bullet??
If you want to go fly fishing you don't take an ocean rod, yea you "could" use it, butttt!

Ordinary ball (ie full metal jacket round nose) 115 grain ammo is generally the cheapest, and makes good practice ammo.
Note that even though this is probably the WORST type of 9mm ammo for defense, statistically, its probably true that more Americans are killed by this 9mm ammo type than any other. Don't dismiss this as "worthless". . .its not.
In general ball ammo is the most reliable type and should feed well in ANY 9mm. The rules of the Hague convention specify that soldiers MUST use full-jacketed type ammo during war, so military forces generally will use ball pistol ammo only.
As another consideration, some of the older 9mm designs will jam if you try to run flat-nosed, hollowpoint, or other funny-shaped bullets through them. So that might be a legitimate reason to pick ball ammo for your gun.
Ball ammo may also offer more penetration, and if that is a concern (eg you're in a cold place where people are always wearing lots of heavy winter clothing, or you think you may need to be shooting through barriers) that could be another reason to go with ball.
For defense, *IF* you want/need to use ball ammo and your gun can handle overpressure loads, then I think the 124 grain NATO ammo is probably the best. This loaded to slightly higher pressure than standard 9mm. (Note that if your gun can't handle non-ball ammo, it probably ALSO isn't supposed to be fired with +P ammo).
If your gun can handle ANY ammo (and most of the modern designs can including Glock, Smith, SIG, Beretta, CZ-75, etc), I'd say your best bet for personal defense is a good premium hollowpoint 9mm +P load in either 124 or 115 grain. The premium brands are generally labelled just that: "personal defense".
In terms of which exact brand and which exact load, that's the subject of endless idle speculation and debate, much of which is conducted by individuals who have never shot anyone, nor ever seen nor treated a bullet wound.
Suffice it to say that in *MY* opinion the various +P rounds put out by different makers are more similar than different. Its just not worth the effort trying to uncover miniscule differences between rounds that in practice probably aren't going to matter.
Ultimately, your tactics and skill as a shooter are going to be more important than whether or not you have this brands 124 grain 9mm+P at 1210 fps vs that brands 124 grain 9mm+P at 1190 fps vs the other guys 115 grain +P round at 1320 fps.
Just make sure that whatever ammo you buy, that you test it to make sure it cycles your particular gun properly, and that you are comfortable using it.
In terms of PRACTICAL differences, in my experience, the difference in point of impact between 115 grain ball and 124 grain +P ammo is small enough at less than 15 yards that its effectively irrelevant.
The 124 grain +P ammo will have a *LITTLE* more recoil, but again, not so much more than you'd notice or care, unless you were firing from a really small light pistol to begin with.0 -

Practice with the 115gr stuff, learn your firearm, shoot it often. Choose your defensive brand of choice, make sure it functions in your gun, consider it practice while you are function testing the ammo. I would load JHP if intending to use it in the home, or out in the world. It will decrease the chances of over penetration, or striking someone you didnt intend to shoot.0 -
Been shooting a ton of the cheap Federal lately. 8.97 box/50 at Wallyworld, 115 Gr.FMJ. My G19 home gun is alway loaded with 115 gr JHP Federal 9BP. Low flash and in the half a dozen or 9mm I have owned over the years, 100 percent reliable. 0
