Best SELLING doesn't necessarily mean best for your purposes.
I believe by pure production volume the Marlin 60 is the best selling .22 rifle of all time.
I believe the CURRENT best selling 9mm semi-auto pistol is actually the Springfield XD, though this will vary from year to year. Ten years ago it was the Glock.
Best selling current production .357 revolver is probably the Smith and Wesson model 686, though I think in terms of HISTORICAL overall production, the no-longer-produced Smith model 19 probably has it beat in terms of sheer number of guns made over the years.
What I would suggest is the following for high-quality classic pieces:
Semi-auto .22 rifles worth looking at: Marlin 60, Ruger 10-22
Manual repeater .22 rifles worth looking at: Marlin 36 (lever action), CZ452 (bolt action).
Service-type 9mm luger pistols: Glock 17, Springfield XD, Beretta 92, CZ-75, Smith M&P, and many others.
Which one here is going to depend a LOT on your personal preferences of action/safety type (single action, double action, Glock-striker type, etc), gun composition (steel, polymer, etc), and hand anatomy.
.357 magnum revolver: Smith models 19, 66, 686, 60, 65, 586, and probably a few others. Which one is going to depend a little bit on personal preference with respect to size, capacity and weight.
Remember that handguns ideal for hunting and target shooting usually don't make good concealed carry guns because they're too large. In GENERAL the BEST target and hunting guns have long barrels that makes them less ideal for home defense indoors.
I really think a Smith model 19 is an excellent all-around .357 revolver for the average guy looking for something that can be used for target shooting, home defense, and hunting, without spending too much money. Its also something that women or non-gun enthusiasts can learn to use fairly easily, which is a potential plus too in a home defense pistol.
